What means LoRaWAN®? A brief overview
LoRaWAN® belongs to the family of low-power networks (LPWAN). At regular intervals, these networks are transmitting extremely small data packages detectable by sensors to a communication center via radio. Thanks to their low bandwidth, these networks excel through a particularly low power consumption. The transmitters do normally not require an own power supply, but draw their energy from batteries whose lifetime can be up to ten years depending on application and utilization. The transmitters and receivers have a coverage range of up to 15 km depending on the environmental conditions. The signals can penetrate without any problems through building walls and can thus reach even deep-indoor sites such as basement rooms.
Easy installation LoRaWAN®
In contrast to sensors which require elaborate and sophisticated configuration via SIM cards, LoRaWAN® simply operates by plug & play. The sensors are connected directly to the LoRaWAN® network.

Our ambition Germany-wide LoRaWAN® coverage
Netzikon provides network coverage in Germany and is continually expanding its network to cover the whole country. Companies wishing to connect their terminal units via this infrastructure can acquire connectivity quickly and cost-efficiently: Netzikon registers the respective terminal device. The company must only switch it on and the data can be transmitted reliably and securely.
LoRaWAN™ The technology at a glance
LoRaWAN® is based on the worldwide open industry standard LoRaWAN® and uses free frequency bands of the license-free ISM bands. Within Europe, these are the bands in the 868 MHz range. Thanks to the frequency spread, this technology is almost immune to electromagnetic radiation. Depending on the environmental conditions, the ranges between transmitter and receiver can be up to 15 km. Communication between terminal devices takes place via different frequency channels with data rates from 0.3 to 50 kbit/s. In order maximize battery lifetime and control the overall network capacity, the LoRaWAN® network controls both the data rate and RF output individually for each terminal unit using the adaptive data rate (ADR).
The power consumption of a sensor is only about 10 mA with data transfer and even only 100 nA in the idle mode. Thus – depending on the application – battery lifetimes of 2 to 10 years are possible.
The LoRaWAN® technology offers the advantage of bidirectional data transmission: Thus, it is possible not only to gather data, but also to control devices actively via the LoRaWAN® network. The standardized interfaces (API) of the LoRaWAN® infrastructure permit a quick and flexible connection of both sensors and applications. Sensor data are encrypted and transported up to the Cloud application.
Another important criterion for the success and acceptance of the Internet of Things (IoT) is the security and privacy of the data transported. The data are encrypted at two levels: i.e. using a common network key (AES 128) for the network level and another network key (AES 128) for the application level. This encryption supplements the procedure defined by the LoRaWAN® standard which is applied with a 100 percent compatibility with the LoRaWAN® standard. Netzikon is the only LPWAN network operator in Germany who offers this additional security.

- Provisioning: terminal device pre-provisioned or spontaneous OTA (Over-the-Air)
- Coverage ranges: > 2 km in urban areas, > 15 km in rural areas
- Sensitivity: -137 dBm; transmit power: +20 dBm
- Data packets: approx. 250 bytes / packet (with maximally 59 bytes traffic data)
